Rights Respecting and School of Sanctuary

We support the ‘City of Sanctuary’ vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

We endorse the City of Sanctuary Charter and agree to act in accordance with City of Sanctuary values and apply the network principles within our work (as far as our specific context enables us to).

We recognise the contribution of people seeking sanctuary. Sanctuary seekers are welcomed, included and supported within our context. We expect our branches or local groups (if any) to support their local City of Sanctuary group if one exists and will facilitate contact between them and their local City of Sanctuary group.

Gold Rights Respecting School Award for Glasshouses

We are delighted to be a GOLD Rights Respecting School . You can read what the assessor thought of our RRSA work in our Gold report below.

On the 20th November 1989 the world made a set of promises for every child on earth. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international statement of all of those promises. UNICEF protects and promotes those rights.

These rights try to make sure that every child is healthy, educated, treated fairly and listened to. They also make sure that all children are protected from violence, abuse and exploitation.

“Rights” are things every child should have or be able to do. All children have the same rights. These rights are listed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We are extremely proud to be a Gold Rights Respecting School. A Rights Respecting ethos is at the heart of everything we do at the Upper Nidderdale Primary Federation, helping us to be CHAMPS, in and out of school.  This is the highest stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award. It is granted by Unicef UK to schools that have fully embedded children’s rights throughout the school in its policies, practise and ethos.

Our Rights Respecting Pupil Leadership Team have organised;

  • Fundraising to pay for a School in a Box to be sent to Turkey after the earthquakes.
  • Organised a SHOESHARE to raise funds for pupils in Africa.
  • Organised a cake stall to raise money for children in Syria.
  • Raised money to twin our school toilet with a toilet in India.

In our school, Pupil Voice is extremely important. We value Article 12, and children have the opportunity to express their views and to shape the direction of the school through our Pupil Leadership Teams and House Captains
