Sports and Physical Activities

At the Upper Nidderdale Primary Federation, we believe that supporting children to be physically active is of vital importance.

All classes take part in 'Active in 10' every afternoon. We ensure that all pupils are physically active for 10 minutes mid-way through the afternoon. These activities include jogging, skipping, dancing or keep fit. We made the decision to make this part of the afternoon timetable because it encourages pupils to be physically active and it enhances learning in the afternoon by:

    • Improving concentration and attention in class.
    • Strengthening memory and problem-solving skills.
    • Encouraging discipline and perseverance, which support learning.

Physical Education Lessons

We made the decision to partner with a professional sports organisation to ensure that pupils receive Physical Education of the highest standard. We have partnered with Harrogate Town A.F.C. To deliver our ambitious Physical Education Intent. As a community-based charity, they promote our values alongside teaching first class lessons.

In P.E. Lessons, pupils improve their physical health by:

    • Strengthening bones and muscles.
    • Improving heart and lung fitness.
    • Developing balance, coordination, and flexibility.
  • Supports mental well-being
    • Reduces stress and anxiety.
    • Boosts mood by releasing "feel-good" chemicals in the brain.
    • Builds self-confidence and self-esteem.
    • Helps children feel happier and more energetic.
    • Develops a sense of belonging

Clubs and Community Involvement

We offer a variety of extra-curricular clubs that support physical activities such as;

  • Cycle club
  • Sports clubs - changing the focus each term (football, tennis and athletics)
  • Running club
  • Roller booting club

Each week, we invite families to our 'Wake Up, Shake Up' where they can exercise alongside their children (and staff!) to encourage physical activity.
